SMOKE IN THIS LIFE NOT THE NEXT

Sun, Aug 23 — Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Gratitude & Faithfulness

Sumatra — Smooth, Steady

Woodford Reserve — Warm, Trustworthy

The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost does not arrive with triumph but with steadiness — the kind of grace that feels like a Sumatra’s slow burn, patient in its unfolding, confident without haste. Woodford Reserve follows with its familiar warmth, a bourbon that doesn’t posture or perform but simply remains faithful, like a friend who keeps showing up even when the week has been uneven.

This Sunday asks a simple but searching question: Where has God been faithful this week? Not in the dramatic rescues or the sudden breakthroughs, but in the quiet continuities — the strength to rise, the patience to endure, the small mercies that stitched the days together.

St. Francis de Sales offers the week’s spiritual posture:

“Be patient in persevering… be content with taking small steps, until you have the legs to run, or better still, wings to fly.”

A Sumatra teaches the same lesson. You don’t rush its wisdom. You let the slow work of God become the slow work of your soul.

And then the saint’s second image settles in:

“Resign yourself for now to being a little bee in a hive… soon capable of making honey.”

Gratitude is the hive. Faithfulness is the honey. Every small obedience becomes sweetness stored for future strength.

Tonight’s smoke invites one quiet act: to notice where God stayed, where He steadied, where He whispered fidelity into the week.

KEEPER OF THE BEES (1935)

Jamie McFarland • Little Scout • Molly Campbell Directed by Christy Cabanne • RKO Radio Pictures

A Veteran’s Vigil Where Tending Becomes the Door to Healing

Keeper of the Bees is a pastoral moral drama that understands the quiet holiness of stewardship. A wounded veteran, a dying beekeeper, and a cottage by the sea become the stage for a deeper revelation: sometimes God heals by giving us something small to protect. The film’s tone is gentle, its pace unhurried, its heart anchored in the belief that creation itself can mend the soul. Jamie’s apprenticeship is not heroic; it is humble — a reminder that obedience to small duties can restore what violence has broken.

This is drama without bitterness. The danger is despair. The fire is duty. The verdict is renewal.

1. Production & Cultural Setting

American Pastoralism A 1930s portrait of rural virtue shaped by Porter’s conservationist spirituality.

Post‑War Healing Audiences longed for stories where wounds could mend through simplicity and service.

Drama of Stewardship Conflict resolved not by force but by tending, guarding, and learning.

Nature as Moral Teacher The hive becomes a living catechism of order, labor, and harmony.

Romance as Restoration Love emerges as part of healing, not spectacle.

2. Story Summary

The Inheritance A dying beekeeper entrusts Jamie with his cottage and hives.

The Discipline Jamie learns the rhythms of the bees — order, patience, vigilance.

The Companions Little Scout’s courage and Molly’s quiet loyalty draw him into community.

The Trials Secrets, misunderstandings, and Jamie’s lingering wounds test his resolve.

The Renewal Through tending the hive, Jamie discovers purpose, peace, and love.

3. Moral & Emotional Resonances

A. Stewardship Heals the Wounded Caring for small things restores the soul.

B. Nature Teaches Order The hive models harmony, labor, and obedience.

C. Friendship Awakens Courage Scout’s boldness becomes Jamie’s anchor.

D. Duty Is a Form of Love Faithfulness to simple tasks becomes devotion.

E. Healing Grows in Quiet Places Renewal thrives where noise and ambition fade.

4. Hospitality Pairing — Drawn From the Film Itself

Food: Honey and warm bread — the beekeeper’s own table, simple, rustic, the sweetness gathered from the hives Jamie learns to tend. Vegetable soup — the cottage’s humble fare, nourishing, Depression‑era honest.

Drink: Hot tea with honey — offered in the film’s domestic scenes, a comfort for the wounded and a symbol of the hive’s gift.

Atmosphere: A coastal cottage, the hum of bees drifting through open windows, late‑summer light on wooden floors.

Symbol: The hive — the place where tending becomes transformation.

5. Reflection Prompts

Where is God asking me to tend what is small.

Where has stewardship begun to heal my wounds.

Where is quiet labor forming my soul.

Where is friendship awakening courage.

Where is renewal waiting in the hive entrusted to me.
