Baruch, Chapter 3, Verse 5-7

5 Do not remember the wicked deeds of our ancestors, but remember at this time your power and your name, 6 for you are the LORD our God; and you, LORD, we will praise! 7 This is why you put into our hearts the fear of you: that we may call upon your name, and praise you in our exile, when we have removed from our hearts all the wickedness of our ancestors who sinned against you.

Smoke in This Life, Not the Next. Tue, Oct 20 — The Swift Fire of the Humble Cigar: Smooth Sumatra  Pour: Eagle Rare  Reflection: Strengthen the habit. The story of Angela and Ursula is one of those hidden flames in the Church’s long memory — a quiet revelation of how swiftly God completes His work in souls who have already surrendered everything. St. Peter Claver, who spent his life among the forgotten and the suffering, recognized holiness not by reputation but by radiance. He saw it in two women the world never noticed: one poor, one crippled, both obscure, both faithful. Angela’s charity was simple and severe. She took Ursula into her home, tended her sores, bore her weight, and offered her the dignity of companionship. Claver visited them as a priest who understood that confession and bread are sometimes the only medicine the poor receive. When Angela feared Ursula was dying, he answered not with sentiment but with certainty — four days remained. And when the appointed...

Monday Night at the Movies 📅 Year Two: The Way of Mercy — Memory, Martyrdom, and Eucharistic Hope Renunciation — Francis of Assisi (1961) Renunciation reveals the freedom that comes when a man releases every false attachment and stands before God with nothing but his soul. Francis shows that mercy begins by letting go, and that poverty of spirit becomes the doorway to Eucharistic life. His surrender becomes the pattern for a heart made entirely available to Christ. Fidelity — Francesco (1989) Fidelity teaches that holiness is sustained not by dramatic gestures but by daily perseverance through loneliness, misunderstanding, and interior trial. This film shows that mercy often takes the form of staying — staying with God, staying with one’s brothers, staying with one’s vocation. Fidelity becomes a quiet martyrdom that shapes the soul over time. Tenderness — Therese (1986) Tenderness reveals the strength hidden in small acts of love offered without fanfare or recognition. There...

Smoke in this life, not the next Tue, Oct 13 — Devotion to the Holy Face / Miracle of the Sun   Cigar: Light Cameroon  Pour: Water + gratitude  Reflection: Obey like Fatima’s children. Do not run from grace. The Miracle of the Sun was entrusted to children who obeyed without hesitation. Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta did not negotiate with Heaven; they simply received what was given. Their obedience became the narrow gate through which God shook the world. Fatima teaches that grace is never abstract — it arrives with a summons, and the soul must step forward. Devotion to the Holy Face carries the same demand. The Face bruised by blows and crowned with thorns does not ask for admiration but for surrender. To contemplate it is to hear Christ’s quiet question: “Why do you run away from grace?” He asks it without accusation, the way He asked Peter, “Do you love Me?” Grace approaches gently, yet men retreat because grace unmasks the illusions they have learned to cherish. M...
