Best Places In Ohio To See The Eclipse

The best places to see the total solar eclipse in Ohio
are marked on the map above, with red being the best,
followed by orange and then yellow.

The Total Solar Eclipse in Ohio will be on April 8, 2024, from approximately 3:08 PM (totality may last up to several minutes starting at approximately 3:10 PM). Click here to see the zones of the Ohio Solar Eclipse.

According to greatamericaneclipse.com, most Ohioans may expect to see the total eclipse last up to several minutes, beginning around 3:10 PM. The range of the eclipse’s totality spans over 110 miles. The area for best viewing is from the western edge of the state from Defiance to Hamilton to the northern edge of the state in Toledo and over to the Eastern edge of the state in the northern Youngstown area.

The longest time for Ohio’s solar eclipse totality is expected from Greenville to Avon Lake, spanning 3 minutes and 52 seconds to 3 minutes and 58 seconds. Other cities in the longer ranges of totality include Wapakoneta, Marion, Celina, Sidney, Lima, Sandusky, Tiffin, Norwalk, Bellefontaine, Troy, etc.

The moon’s total eclipse of the sun is one of the greatest shows in nature. Be sure to secure proper eclipse eyewear well ahead of time for safe viewing. Also, beware, since the range for the total eclipse spans much of Ohio, eclipse day cloud cover may force mass traffic to areas of Ohio where the eclipse may be best seen as the weather reveals itself on eclipse day.

On Sundays Pray:

O Glorious Queen of Heaven and Earth, Virgin Most Powerful, thou who hast the power to crush the head of the ancient serpent with thy heel, come and exercise this power flowing from the grace of thine Immaculate Conception. Shield us under the mantle of thy purity and love, draw us into the sweet abode of thy heart and annihilate and render impotent the forces bent on destroying us. Come Most Sovereign Mistress of the Holy Angels and Mistress of the Most Holy Rosary, thou who from the very beginning hast received from God the power and the mission to crush the head of Satan. Send forth thy holy legions, we humbly beseech thee, that under thy command and by thy power they may pursue the evil spirits, counter them on every side, resist their bold attacks and drive them far from us, harming no one on the way, binding them to the foot of the Cross to be judged and sentenced by Jesus Christ Thy Son and to be disposed of by Him as He wills.

St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church, come to our aid in this grave battle against the forces of darkness, repel the attacks of the devil and free the members of the Auxilium Christianorum, and those for whom the priests of the Auxilium Christianorum pray, from the strongholds of the enemy.

St. Michael, summon the entire heavenly court to engage their forces in this fierce battle against the powers of hell. Come O Prince of Heaven with thy mighty sword and thrust into hell Satan and all the other evil spirits. O Guardian Angels, guide and protect us. Amen.

The Paradox of Our Age

We have taller buildings, but shorter tempers;
Wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints;
We spend more, but have less;
We buy more, but enjoy it less.
We have bigger houses, but smaller families;

More conveniences, but less time;
We have more degrees, but less sense;
More knowledge, but less judgement;
More experts, but more problems;
More medicine, but less wellness.
We spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry too quickly,
Stay up too late, get up too tired, read too seldom, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.
We talk too much, love too seldom, and lie too often.
We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life;
We’ve added years to life, not life to years.
We’ve conquered outer space, but not inner space;
It’s time when there is much in the show window, and nothing in the stock room.

Consider a saltwater pool.

A saltwater pool is an alternative to a traditional chlorine pool. Although you don’t add chlorine tablets to a saltwater pool, it does still contain chlorine. It just has a smaller amount that’s generated through the filter system.

A saltwater pool contains 10 times less salt than the ocean. There’s around 3,000 ppm (parts per million) salinity in a saltwater pool. By comparison, there’s 35,000 ppm in the ocean. Some people find this type of pool less harsh on their hair, eyes, and skin than a chlorinated pool.

Saltwater pools are becoming more common at hotels, resorts, and on cruise ships. You can find natural saltwater lagoon pools in places like Mozambique and Bolivia. You can also choose to have a saltwater pool installed in your own home.

Saltwater pools for health

Swimming in a saltwater pool may be better for someone who has asthma or allergies. That’s especially true when it comes to indoor pools. You might notice a strong chlorine smell upon entering an indoor pool area. That’s because of the chloramines, the mix of chlorine and ammonia. In an outdoor pool, the smell quickly evaporates, whereas it’s contained indoors.

It usually is most strong around the surface of the pool, where swimmers take their breaths. If you have trouble breathing, you may find swimming in an indoor chlorinated pool irritating.

One 2003 study found that young children who swim regularly in an indoor chlorinated pool were at greater risk for lung inflammation and developing asthma. But more research is needed to determine if a saltwater pool is the best alternative.

Elk Hunting in Idaho: What you need to know

Want to hunt elk in Idaho? Good choice, but do you know about the latest changes in General-Season Non-Resident deer and elk tags? Get the latest update, along with other useful information about elk hunting in the Gem State!

Idaho is a popular elk hunting destination. To begin with, according to the latest estimates by Idaho Department of Fish & Game, the elk herds in the state number approximately 120,000 head. In spite of hard winters of the last few years, which hurt the mule deer populations, the elk are stable or growing and expanding their range in most of Idaho. For the six years starting from 2014 hunters harvested over 20,000 elk each season. Over 100,000 hunters take part in the pursuit, thanks to generous allocation of licenses, and availability of over-the-counter tags. In 2019, hunter harvest was 20,532 elk, of which 11,418 were antlered, at an overall success rate of 22%. General hunts accounted for a higher share of harvest (13,799 elk), but controlled hunts sported a significantly higher success rate: 38%.

o   Celebrating Bloomsday should be a day filled with adventures.

The Baba Goes Flying

This story is related to world tapas day, sort of.  When I was two and my brother was under one my parents took us on an adventure using the military airlift command. Soldiers and Sailors, and their families are allowed to fly free on any military flight provided there is room. As was the case my father boarded my mother my brother and myself all on board a military plane and took us to Rota, Spain for a VACA from Sigonella, Sicily to Rota, Spain.

It was a long trip, and I was tired and cranky and refused to stop crying once we got settled in a hotel room for $16.00 a night. At that time, I had a comfort pillow my Aunt Linda had made for me which I called the “Baba”. My father, being frustrated with my refusal to stop crying suddenly picked up the “Baba” which had a loose string and unknown to me tried the string around a finger and threatened to throw my “Baba” off the third-floor balcony if I did not stop crying. That of course made it worse, and I screamed even louder. Then my father, true to his word threw the “Baba” for a flight but when it got to the end of the string the string broke, and the “Baba” flew out the balcony and landed on the balcony on the second floor. I screamed louder.

My mother had had it with my father and told him that he had better get the “Baba” back or else shit would happen. So, my father and mother, I and my brother all went down to the room under us. My father knocked. No answer. So, then he knocked again. No answer. My father tried the door it opened and looking inside could see my “Baba” out on the balcony he then entered the room holding my hand with my mother cradling my brother behind him. My father stated that we made it about 1/3 in when he noticed a head raising off the pillow of the bed and then in comical fashion, he backed up almost knocking my mother down. We all ran back upstairs. Now I screamed even louder, and my mother really let him have it.  My father was really frustrated and did not know what to do. Going out on the balcony he noticed that there was a trellis rising from the ground floor going up to the balcony right next to the Tapas Bar. My father, the criminal that he was, marched out there, climbed the trellis retrieved the “Baba” and saved the day. I still screamed all night.

Saint John's Eve[7], starting at sunset on 23 June, is the eve of the feast day of Saint John the Baptist. This is one of the very few feast days marking a saint's birth, rather than their death. The Gospel of Luke (Luke 1:26–37, 56–57) states that John was born six months before Jesus; therefore, the feast of John the Baptist was fixed on 24 June, six months before Christmas. In the Roman calendar, 24 June was the date of the summer solstice, and Saint John's Eve is closely associated with Midsummer festivities in Europe. Traditions are similar to those of May Day and include bonfires (St John's fires), feasting, processions, church services, and gathering wild plants.

When we were in Germany there were bonfires lit all thru the night.

Germany sees a number of Midsummernight festivals around Johannistag (St. John's Day, 24 June).

·         Politics, Religion, and the Ruling Class[2]

o   The ruling class is society’s “ins.” This class comprises persons in government, those who depend for their livelihoods on government, and whose socio-economic prospects and hopes are founded on government. Thus, it includes most people in the educational establishment, the media, and large corporations. Its leading elements and its major voting constituencies are the Democratic party. But it transcends political parties because any number of Republicans aspire to its privileges and share its priorities.

o   Above all, the ruling class defines itself by a set of attitudes, foremost of which is contempt for those outside itself. This contempt stems from the rather uniform education that the ruling class’s members absorbed from universities and which they developed by living in their subculture.

§  Believing themselves intelligent apostles of scientific truth, they regard others as dumb and in the grip of religious obscurantism.

§  Religion is the greatest of the divides between the ruling class and those it deems its inferiors.

·         Whereas they believe themselves morally good and psychologically sound, they regard others as suffering from psychological dysfunctions and phobias—effectively as bad people.

§  The ruling class does not believe that those outside itself have the right or capacity to conduct their own lives.

o   The “country class” is the term used in British-American discourse since the 17th century to describe society’s “outs.” The rest of us. Lots more people—quite heterogeneous. Though for reasons heterogeneous and often internally inconsistent, more than two thirds of this class is resentful of the ruling class.

These seem to be the secular religion’s commandments:

1. Science is the only authority, and we are its prophets. For all practical purposes, Science R-us. Thou shalt have no other sources of authority beside us.

2. Thou shalt neither speak nor think anything that besmirches our authority or honor. Whatever we deem inconvenient to us is politically incorrect and shall be punished.

3. Dishonor all that diminishes our authority: father, mother, husband, wife, any notion of “nature.”

4. Every day is like every other day. It is forbidden to waste time thinking about whence you came and whither you are going.

5. For yours and for society’s convenience, you may make categories that allow you to kill those whom you place within them.

6. Everything belongs to all. But the use of anything belongs to whomever can exclude others from using it.

7. Copulate as you may and count it as the charter of your freedom and worth.

8. Speak as seems best to serve your interests.

9. Do what you can to put yourself in position to do unto your neighbor before he does unto you.

10. Grovel before your superior, step on your subordinate.

July 21-Claire’s Corner

·         Let Freedom Ring Day 15 Freedom from Wastefulness

o   Pope St. John Paul II said, “Artistic talent is a gift from God and whoever discovers it in himself has a certain obligation: to know that he cannot waste this talent, but must develop it.”

Here are ten unmistakable signs that your gifts are going to waste[7] in the wrong job:

1. The real world keeps changing, but your company doesn't change.  Your job description remains the same, month in and month out -- even if you were told that the job would provide lots of great learning experiences.

2. Your manager isn't interested in trying new things. They aren't interested in making improvements to the work flow or innovating in any other way. You can't afford to waste your career working for someone like that!

3. You have tried many times and failed at getting your boss to be open to change. I believe 99% of the "change management" initiatives companies undertake are pointless,  because it's so often not the employees who are resistant to change -- it's their managers!

4. You have big ideas about your job. You see ways to help your employer serve its customers better and generate more income. You might roll your ideas around in your head or even commit them to paper -- but in your heart you know they will never see the light of day.

5. You are the only "malcontent" in your work group. You are the only person who wishes your manager would wake up and step into the future. Your coworkers are perfectly content. You need a snappier group of people to work with!

6. When you look around at work, you don't see anybody you could learn from. Even as a relatively new employee, you already know more about how things work, and come up with more ideas, than almost anybody else.

7. You daydream about a job that will give you more creative freedom, acknowledge you for your contributions and allow you to feel like a valued member of a team that is accomplishing great things. You don't experience any of those feelings in your current role.

8. When you look ahead, you don't see anything changing at your job in a year or beyond.

9. You feel sick on Sunday night when you contemplate going back to work on Monday morning.

10. Your trusty gut hates your job. Trust your gut!

July 28-Claire’s Corner-Don’t be full of yourself

·         Let Freedom Ring Day 22 Freedom from Narcissism

o   In Greek mythology, we find the rather tragic figure of Narcissus. As the story goes, he is an extraordinary young man in every possible way. But, he is aloof and rather full of himself. Anyone who falls in love with him pays a steep price because he will not love them back. Eventually, while hunting, Narcissus stoops down to the water to get a drink. He sees his own reflection and falls madly in love with it. He reaches out to grab the reflection and drowns, suffering the abysmal fate others who tried to love him did. In psychology, narcissism is described as "selfishness, involving a sense of entitlement, a lack of empathy, and a need for admiration, as characterizing a personality type." My brothers and sisters, does not this word describe our society to a T?

Peal and dice potatoes. Boil until fork soft. Put in mixer with other ingredients and blend until smooth. Put in casserole dish and bake 350 for 20-25 minutes.

·         Let Freedom Ring Day 29 Freedom from Racism

o   It is our society that likes dividing the population into separate corporate bodies in order to pit them against each other. Certainly, more nefarious political systems need and thrive upon such divisions. Within the Body of Christ, this is wholly evil. One of the marks of the Church is 'One', that is, that we are one in Christ. That oneness is not subservient to worldly divisions and political jostling. Consider that the Catholic Church has over 1.4 billion members. 1.4 billion come from every conceivable culture, language, and skin color. Yet we are called to be one. That oneness starts here and stretches to eternity.

Introduction to Judges[1]

The Hebrew word translated “Judges” in the English title of the book refers not to specialized judicial officers or magistrates but to leaders in general. According to the biblical narrative these judges led Israel from the end of the conquest of Canaan until the beginning of the monarchy. The period of the Judges, therefore, extended from the death of Joshua until the installation of Saul as Israel’s first king by the prophet Samuel, who was also the last judge.

·         The Book of Judges begins with two introductory passages.

o   The first (chap. 1) gives a description of the situation in Canaan after the Israelite conquest. It emphasizes the continued existence of the indigenous inhabitants of Canaan in many parts of the land because of Israel’s inability to drive them out completely.

o   The second passage is a thematic introduction to the period of the Judges, describing a cyclical pattern of infidelity, oppression, “crying out,” and deliverance.

·         The main part of the book consists of a series of stories about thirteen leaders whose careers are described in greater or lesser detail. The exploits of six of these—Othniel, Ehud, Deborah, Gideon, Jephthah, and Samson—are related at length, and all are shown to have delivered Israel from oppression or danger. They are customarily called “major judges,” whereas the other six—Shamgar, Tola, Jair, Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon—who appear only in brief notices, are designated “minor judges.” The thirteenth, Abimelech, is included in neither group, since his story is essentially a continuation of that of Gideon and his career is presented as deplorable, a cautionary tale of royal ambition.

·         The final section of the book consists of two episodes, one about the migration of the tribe of Dan and the other about an intertribal war directed against the tribe of Benjamin. These stories illustrate the religious and political disorder that prevailed at the time when, as yet “there was no king in Israel”.

Its peak is the highest point in the state of Hawaii. However, most of the mountain is under water. When measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea is over 10,000 meters or 33,000 feet tall. ·         Let Freedom Ring Day 36 Freedom from Avarice

o   Avarice is a synonym of Greed. It is one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Some distinguish between Avarice and greed, essentially implying that Avarice is like Greed-on-Steroids. No matter which word we care to use, both regard an excessive or inordinate desire of gain or wealth; a selfish or excessive desire for more than is needed or deserved, especially of money, wealth, food, or other possessions.

o   Avarice has a long if uncomplicated history in English. Chaucer in his 14th-century The Parson's Tale compared avarice with covetise, a now obsolete word that means "covetousness" ("Covetise is to covet such things as thou hast not; and avarice is to withhold and keep such things as thou hast, without rightful need"-743), and Shakespeare uses it in Macbeth ("With this there grows / In my most ill-composed affection such / A stanchless avarice that, were I king, / I should cut off the nobles for their lands, / Desire his jewels and this other's house: / And my more-having would be as a sauce / To make me hunger more"-IV.iii.76-82).

o   Abundance of possessions or abundant life? Which will we choose? `

§  Greed: desires more and more

§  Covetousness: greed with jealousy (desiring what another has)

§  Avarice: an excessive desire to obtain and keep money or possessions. Hoarding.

·         Hoarding: News story of woman whose house is filled with stuff. Her bed is stacked with stuff. In the summertime she sleeps outside on a glider, because there is no room in her house. DAY 18 – VIRGIN MOST POWERFUL, PRAY THAT WE RECEIVE THE FRUIT OF PEACE

SEPTEMBER

September--Our buildings need to be winterized. Now is the time to think of energy conservation measures, adding caulking and painting, completing needed repairs, composting yard waste, and protecting garden plants for late fall and winter. Do we regard our abodes as God's dwelling space, a sacred trust and healthy place? Do we cherish the abundance of space and use it properly as good stewards?

Overview of September[1]

The month of September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, whose memorial the Church celebrates on September 15. September falls during the liturgical season known as Ordinary Time, which is represented by the liturgical color green. This symbol of hope is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. It is used in the offices and Masses of Ordinary Time.

September is Harvest Time

Since man is both a spiritual and physical being, the Church provides for the needs of man in his everyday life. The Church's liturgy and feasts in many areas reflect the four seasons of the year (spring, summer, fall and winter). The months of August, September, October and November are part of the harvest season, and as Christians we recall God's constant protection over his people and give thanksgiving for the year's harvest.

September is the end of the summer season and the start of the fall season.

Explanation of Ember Days—Three days set apart for fasting, abstinence, and prayer during each of the four seasons of the year. They were the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday after St. Lucy (or Lucia, d. 304) (December 13), the First Sunday of Lent, Pentecost, and the feast of the Holy Cross (September 14). Since the revision of the Roman calendar in 1969, Ember Days are to be observed at the discretion of the National Conference of Bishops. Moreover, their observance may be extended beyond three days and even repeated during the year. Possibly occasioned by the agricultural feasts of ancient Rome, they came to be observed by Christians for the sanctification of the different seasons of the year, and for obtaining God's blessing on the clergy to be ordained during the Embertides. (Etym. Anglo-Saxon oemerge, ashes.) — Modern Catholic Dictionary by John A. Hardon, SJ, Doubleday, 1980.

So, during these times the Church had a threefold focus:

(1) sanctifying each new season by turning to God through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

(2) giving thanks to God for the various harvests of each season; and

(3) praying for the newly ordained and for future vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Since the reorganization of the Roman calendar in 1969 after the Second Vatican Council, Ember Days are still retained in principle, but how and when they are to be observed is at the discretion of each country's Episcopal Conference. There is no longer set Mass readings for the Ember Days in the Ordinary Rite. Another harvest feast is September 29, the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. Before the revision of the calendar, this used to be only the feast of St. Michael. In many countries this day was referred to as "Michaelmas" and is celebrated with traditional foods and customs

September is the time to reflect on the Sorrows of Mary

September Devotion: Our Lady of Sorrows.[2]  Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Due to her feast day on September 15, the month of September has traditionally been set aside to honor Our Lady of Sorrows. All the sorrows of Mary (the prophecy of Simeon, the three days' loss, etc.) are merged in the supreme suffering at the Passion. In the Passion, Mary suffered a martyrdom of the heart because of Our Lord's torments and the greatness of her love for Him. "She it was," says Pope Pius XII, "who immune from all sin, personal or inherited, and ever more closely united with her Son, offered Him on Golgotha to the Eternal Father together with the holocaust of her maternal rights and motherly love. As a new Eve, she made this offering for all the children of Adam contaminated through his unhappy fall. Thus she, who was the mother of our Head according to the flesh, became by a new title of sorrow and glory the spiritual mother of all His members."

Daily Prayers for September

At Morning

O most holy Virgin, Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ: by the overwhelming grief you experienced when you witnessed the martyrdom, the crucifixion, and the death of your divine Son, look upon me with eyes of compassion, and awaken in my heart a tender commiseration for those sufferings, as well as a sincere detestation of my sins, in order that, being disengaged from all undue affection for the passing joys of this earth, I may sigh after the eternal Jerusalem, and that henceforward all my thoughts and all my actions may be directed towards this one most desirable object. Honor, glory, and love to our divine Lord Jesus, and to the holy and immaculate Mother of God. Amen. --Saint Bonaventure

At Noon

Mary, most holy Virgin and Queen of Martyrs, accept the sincere homage of my filial affection. Into thy heart, pierced by so many swords, do thou welcome my poor soul. Receive it as the companion of thy sorrows at the foot of the Cross, on which Jesus died for the redemption of the world. With thee, O sorrowful Virgin, I will gladly suffer all the trials, contradictions, and infirmities which it shall please our Lord to send me. I offer them all to thee in memory of thy sorrows, so that every thought of my mind, and every beat of my heart may be an act of compassion and of love for thee. And do thou, sweet Mother, have pity on me, reconcile me to thy divine Son Jesus, keep me in His grace, and assist me in my last agony, so that I may be able to meet thee in heaven and sing thy glories. Amen.

At 3PM

Most holy Virgin. and Mother, whose soul was pierced by a sword of sorrow in the Passion of thy divine Son, and who in His glorious Resurrection wast filled with never-ending joy at His triumph; obtain for us who call upon thee, so to be partakers in the adversities of Holy Church and the sorrows of the Sovereign Pontiff, as to be found worthy to rejoice with them in the consolations for which we pray, in the charity and peace of the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

At Twilight

O most holy and afflicted Virgin! Queen of Martyrs! thou who didst stand motionless beneath the Cross, witnessing the agony of thy expiring Son--through the unceasing sufferings of thy life of sorrow, and the bliss which now more than amply repays thee for thy past trials, look down with a mother's tenderness and pity on me, who kneel before thee to venerate thy dolors, and place my requests, with filial confidence, in the sanctuary of thy wounded heart; present them, I beseech thee, on my behalf, to Jesus Christ, through the merits of His own most sacred death and passion, together with thy sufferings at the foot of the cross, and through the united efficacy of both obtain the grant of my present petition. To whom shall I resort in my wants and miseries if not to thee, O Mother of Mercy, who, having so deeply drunk of the chalice of thy Son, canst compassionate the woes of those who still sigh in the land of exile? Offer for me to my Savior one drop of the Blood which flowed from His sacred veins, one of the tears which trickled from His divine eyes, one of the sighs which rent His adorable Heart. O refuge of the universe and hope of the whole world, do not reject my humble prayer, but graciously obtain the grant of my petition.

At Slumber.

Mary most sorrowful, Mother of Christians, pray for us. Virgin most sorrowful, pray for us.

September is the month dedicated to contemplation of the Angels.

Devotion to the Angels is a mark of Predestination[3]

The Church has always practiced and encouraged devotion to the holy angels. All ancient liturgies make mentions of them and the protection they provide to men. It is their greatest desire to aid us in all our acts of religion by uniting their supplications to ours. We should honor and love angels as well as our fellow mankind for it is though the Precious Blood of Christ, we are all united. Christ is the head of angels as well as men, and it is as Man that He is Head of the angels. To honor them and love them we must first know them and earnestly strive to cultivate their friendship.

September is the month of Angels and Mary is the Queen of Angels

The church traditionally honors angels during the month of September. Paul in Colossians states of Christ, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he himself might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the blood of his cross through him, whether those on earth or those in heaven.”

“St. Michael and the Angels” is a beautiful and inspiring book telling all about the angels. Filled with stories from the lives and writings of the saints, it tells of the role which the good angels play in the divine economy of saving souls. Led by St. Michael, the Prince of the heavenly host, the angels act as our guardians, serve as messengers from God to us and from us to God, surround the altar during Mass, and bear the graces of the Mass like incense to the altar of God on high. Here is explained the relationship of the angels to the Blessed Virgin Mary and how, if she is to send them to our aid, we must request her to do so. Included too is the prayer to our guardian angel asking him to go in our place to attend Mass when we cannot, plus the way the good angels protect us against the evil spirits. The book also discusses in detail the pre-eminent role of St. Michael as "Champion of the Church," "Defender of Christians," "Guardian of Purgatory," and "Helper of the Sick and Dying."

It is also a good practice to ask for angelic help throughout our day. There are nine choirs of angels and three hierarchies three within three.  Remember to ask their assistance about every two hours throughout your day

First Sphere

The angels of the first sphere serve as the heavenly servants of God the Son incarnated. It includes the Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones.

Upon rising (7 am) address the first choir of angels, the Seraphim. Their chief characteristic is great and ardent love. They were made for one thing alone-----to love the God of Love. Without ceasing they honor, praise, and love the most Blessed Trinity-----they can do nothing else-----this is their happiness.

  • Practice upon rising to try to become a Seraph of love: let this be your habitual disposition. Love and do what God wills. Ask this great gift fervently.
  • Aspiration: "Oh! Blessed Seraphim! Make us love." Say the Shema Yisrael and make a Morning Offering.

  • By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of Seraphim, may it please God to make us worthy to receive into our hearts the fire of his perfect charity. Amen.
  • (1 Our Father and 3 Hail Mary's)

At the second hour (9 am) of the day address the second choir is the Cherubim who continually are employed in contemplating the beauty and perfections of God and will share with us their admirable wisdom, if we ask them, and show ourselves in earnest, by the practice of supplication and prayer. Cherubim are full of zeal for the glory of God and stand ready at all times to defend His honor. Cherubim should be invoked when one is troubled with doubts against faith those who experience temptations against holy purity.

  • Practice: Spend time before praying in great silence and recollection; endeavor to "know God, and Him Whom He has sent, Jesus Christ."
  • Aspiration: "Blessed Cherubim! Teach us to pray."
  • By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of Cherubim, may God in his good pleasure, grant us grace to abandon the ways of sin, and follow the path of Christian perfection. Amen.
  • (1 Our Father and 3 Hail Mary's)

At the fourth hour (11 am) of the day address the third choir is the choir of Thrones. They are called Angels of Peace; calm, tranquility, and stability. Ask them for that peace of soul which is the fruit of a good conscience. Invoke their aid for such as are prone to hatred, passion and impatience; and after their example, practice being meek, calm, and peaceful with all.

  • Practice: Dispose yourself to great sweetness and patience.
  • Aspiration: "O Holy Thrones! Obtain that Divine peace, which surpasses all understanding, may keep our hearts and minds in Jesus Christ, Our Lord."
  • By the intercession of St. Michael and the sacred Choir of Thrones, may it please God to infuse into our hearts the spirit of true and sincere humility. Amen.
  • (1 Our Father and 3 Hail Mary's)

Second Sphere

Second, Sphere angels are considered to work as heavenly governors of creation by subjecting the matter and ruling and guiding the spirits. The second sphere includes the Dominions or Lordships Virtues and the Strongholds Powers or Authorities.

At the sixth hour (1 pm) of the day address the fourth choir of angels which is the choir of Dominations.  They are consumed by their yearning for the interests of God: their principal office is to manifest His will. We should also beg of God to manifest His will to us by these Blessed "Intelligences" and then take care to fulfill it scrupulously, as being the shortest way to perfection and sanctity. We should ask these Angels to help us to spread God's kingdom upon earth, for the conversion of heretics and infidels, and for the return of lukewarm and fallen away Catholics to the practice of the faith.

  • Practice: Give practical proof of your zeal for the glory of God; do something for His reign in souls, as instructing the ignorant.
  • Aspiration: "Holy Dominations! Animate us with thy zeal." It was also at the sixth hour that Jesus was crucified. Traditionally Catholics recite the Angelus at noon, some pray it at six in the morning and six in the evening. For those who wish to make personal change this is a good time to examine our day so far and offer ourselves to our God. It is at the turning point of our day that we recall the turning point of history: the moment when the angel appeared to a young woman named Mary.
  • By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of the Dominations, may it please God to grant us grace to have dominion over our senses, and to correct our depraved passions. Amen
  • (1 Our Father and 3 Hail Mary's)

At the eighth hour (3 pm) of the day address the fifth choir of angels which is the choir of Virtues. Energy and strength are attributed to the Virtues. They have dominion over the elements; all nature is subjected to their control. Hence they can raise or appease the tempest. We may profitably invoke them in unforeseen accidents, sickness, etc. We may also have recourse to them for that strength necessary to lead a penitential life, and root out the inclinations of depraved nature. All persons inclined to the contemplative life should call on this choir of Angels for help, for good thoughts alone do not make holy, one needs also strength to persevere and to accomplish this great task.

  • Practice:  (After work) Visit the Blessed Sacrament to obtain grace to overcome your evil dispositions.
  • Aspiration: "Holy Virtues! Strengthen and fortify us."
  • By the intercession of St. Michael and the admirable heavenly Choir of the Virtues, may it please God to keep us from falling into temptation, and may He deliver us from evil. Amen.
  • (1 Our Father and 3 Hail Mary's)

At the 10th hour (5 pm) of the day address the sixth choir of angels the Powers. These Angels have unlimited mastery over the wicked Spirits; they are endowed with great intelligence and are able to discover their schemes and plans for our destruction. Their power is so amazing that one alone of them would be able to destroy the entire infernal host. It is well to invoke them in temptation: but to merit their assistance we must take care to avoid the occasions of sin.

  • Practice: Resist the attacks of vice and passion; frequently make acts of diffidence in self and confidence in God; combat your evil inclinations.
  • Aspiration: "Lord! Send Thy Angels to assist us."
  • By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of the Powers, may God vouchsafe to keep our souls from the wiles and temptations of the devil. Amen.
  • (1 Our Father and 3 Hail Mary's)

Third Sphere

The angels of the third sphere function as heavenly protectors, messengers and guides to human beings.

At the 12th hour (7 pm) of the day address the seventh choir of angels the Principalities. The Principalities watch over Empires, Provinces, and Dioceses. Purity of intention is the virtue ascribed to them, for in their high functions they never seek but the honor and interest of God alone. Let us imitate them. It is the intention which stamps the action with merit or demerit.

  • Practice: In all you do and say, seek the greater glory of God.
  • Aspiration: "O Holy Spirits! May we, like thee, seek God, for God alone."
  • By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of Principalities, may it please God to fill our souls with the spirit of true and sincere obedience. Amen.
  • (1 Our Father and 3 Hail Mary's)

 At the 14th hour (9 pm) of the day address the eighth choir of angels the Archangels. The Archangels are distinguished from the Angels by the greater importance of their functions: the Guardians of those invested with authority in the Church and State and are remarkable for their love and care of men. Let us imitate them, doing our neighbor all the good we can and invoking in his behalf these Blessed Spirits. Members of this choir are the holy spirits who stand before the throne of God, ever ready to announce His commands. St. Michael is the warrior leader of God’s angels. St. Gabriel is the special messenger of The Holy Spirit. St. Raphael is the angel of Joy.

  • Practice-----Two Acts of Charity, with great affection.
  • Aspiration: "Holy Archangels! Pray for us, and for our priests."
  • By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of Archangels, may it please God to grant us the gift of perseverance in the faith, and in all good works, that we may be thereby enabled to attain the glory of paradise. Amen.
  • (1 Our Father and 3 Hail Mary's)

At the 16th hour (11 pm) of the day address the Ninth choir of the angels. They are charged with the execution of the Divine ordinances and are appointed the Guardians of men. Humility is the virtue particularly ascribed to them-----for though the least among the Choirs, yet they see their celestial companions without desiring their greater, more excellent endowments. The Guardian Angels exercise continual watchfulness over the souls committed to their care. Their number is exceedingly great, and it is not necessary when an Angel has accompanied his charge into Heaven, that he be again assigned to a soul in any future generation. Our Guardian, who is our companion in life, will also be forever at our side in Heaven. The joy of these Angels is immeasurably increased when souls entrusted to their care enter Heaven. The Guardian Angels of the lost souls are not deprived of their share of joy. God in His justice increases also theirs with the others, and then assigns them to the special guard of the Queen of Angels, where they with great joy praise the Infinite Justice of God. Let us, like the humble Guardian Angels, love the lowest place, especially when placed therein by Divine Providence, and to behold with joy the preference given to others.

  • Practice: Three Acts of Humility, interior and exterior.
  • Aspiration: "Who is like God!"
  • By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of all the Angels, may God vouchsafe to grant us their guardianship through this mortal life, and after death a happy entrance into the everlasting glory of heaven. Amen
  • (1 Our Father and 3 Hail Mary's)

OCTOBER 27 Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost

Here is Day 1 of the Novena to the Mother of God for the Nation.

Today we reflect on the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God. Queen conceived without original sin, pray for us.

Pray the Novena to the Mother of God

for the Nation | October 27 – November 4

DAY 1

The Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God

You are wholly beautiful, my beloved, and without a blemish.

– Song of Songs 4:7

Prayer

We fly to your patronage,
O holy Mother of God;

Despise not our prayers in our necessities,

But ever deliver us from all dangers,

O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Reflection

Since God creates an immortal soul through the conjugal union of man and woman, the conception of every human person is sacred. God loves every person into being – even when the conception is an act of lust or violence.

When the Virgin Mary was conceived in the womb of her mother, God created her immortal soul and filled her with His divine life. In the Immaculate Conception, God uniquely redeemed Mary by preserving her from Original Sin through the foreseen merits of Christ, the Savior.

From the first moment of her life, Mary was wholly beautiful, full of grace (Luke 1:28), without any trace of self-centeredness, any inclination to sin, and with unparalleled freedom to love God and all other people. In her conception, God armed Mary to destroy the kingdom of Satan (Genesis 3:15). The charity of Christ filled Mary from the first moment of her existence – in the safety of her mother’s womb.

Pope Pius IX proclaimed the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception in these words: We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful.

The good news of the Immaculate Conception is that there is more love in Mary’s sinless soul that there is evil in the world. In her Immaculate Conception, God empowered Mary to say yes freely to His plan of salvation in Christ and to help us, her sons and daughters, to say yes too.

Prayer

God, Almighty Father, at the moment of our conception You loved each of us into life. You loved Mary wondrously in her Immaculate Conception, preserving her from inheriting the sin of Adam through the foreseen merits of the Savior. You prepared Mary in her conception to be the Mother and partner of Your Son and our loving mother. Give all people an ever-deeper reverence for Your presence and creative action in human conception. Help all to recognize the evil of abortion and contraception and all sins which offend our Creator God. In Mary’s maternal embrace, may every American foster reverence for human life in our nation. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Claire’s Corner-Set your clock’s back tonight

Daylight Saving Time Ends, commonly known as "fall back," is the annual practice of moving clocks one hour backward in order to allow for more daylight in the evening during the warmer months. This change effectively shifts the hours of daylight to better align with the hours when most people are awake and active, providing additional daylight for work, leisure, and energy conservation. The primary purpose of this time shift is to make better use of daylight and reduce energy consumption, as well as to decrease the number of traffic accidents and crime rates.

The concept of Daylight Saving Time was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 but was not widely adopted until World War I when Germany implemented the practice to conserve fuel. Since then, numerous countries have adopted, adjusted, and abandoned the time change based on local needs and preferences. In the United States, Daylight Saving Time was standardized by the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which established the specific dates for the beginning and end of the time change. However, individual states and territories are not required to observe the change, and Arizona and Hawaii currently do not implement Daylight Saving Time.

Daylight Saving Time ends in the United States on the first Sunday in November, marking the return to Standard Time. At this time, clocks are turned back one hour, effectively increasing the number of morning daylight hours while resulting in earlier sunsets in the evening.

Daylight Saving Time Ends facts

  • Arizona, Hawaii, and four US territories (Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) do not observe Daylight Savings Time.
  • Research suggest that daylight savings time is related to a rise in heart attacks, while the end of daylight savings time saw a slight decrease the first three days after the time change.
