Novena to the Holy Spirit for the Seven Gifts
Day Two: Saturday, 6th Week of Easter
The Gift of Fear
The gift of Fear fills us with a sovereign respect for God, and makes us dread nothing so much as to offend Him by sin. It is a fear that arises, not from the thought of hell, but from sentiments of reverence and filial submission to our heavenly Father. It is the fear that is the beginning of wisdom, detaching us from worldly pleasures that could in any way separate us from God. 'They that fear the Lord will prepare their hearts, and in His sight will sanctify their souls.'
Prayer
Come, O blessed Spirit of Holy Fear, penetrate my inmost heart, that I may set you, my Lord and God, before my face forever, help me to shun all things that can offend You, and make me worthy to appear before the pure eyes of Your Divine Majesty in heaven, where You live and reign in the unity of the ever Blessed Trinity, God world without end. Amen.

Job, Chapter 41, Verse 7
When he rises up, the
gods are AFRAID; when he crashes down, they fall back.
Who are the gods?
Co-pilot’s answer: The phrase you’re referring to
comes from the Book of Job in the Bible, specifically Job
41:25. In this passage, the “gods” are not literal deities but rather
a poetic expression used to describe the mighty or powerful beings that are
terrified by the Leviathan, a formidable sea creature described in the book. The Leviathan’s power is so great
that even the mightiest are afraid and retreat when it rises up1.
The term “gods” here
symbolizes those who are considered powerful on earth, suggesting that no
matter how strong they are, there are forces in nature, like the Leviathan,
that can instill fear in them. It’s a metaphorical way of saying
that there are things in creation that are beyond human control and
understanding, which even the strongest and most powerful fear and cannot
dominate1.
Don’t wish for what you can’t handle.[1]
Before Job accepts the challenge to govern the moral order, God warns him that it is far more difficult than governing the natural and physical order. Therefore, Job must first consider what power he has over, for instance, the beasts. Two examples are sufficient to impress upon Job that he faces an impossibility. The first of these is the monster Behemoth, generally thought to be the hippopotamus. It is among the strongest creatures of God’s creation (15-18), all-powerful on the land, untroubled in the water and very difficult to capture (19-24).
The second beast described to Job is Leviathan, the mythical sea monster or, possibly, the crocodile. Can Job catch one with a hook as he catches a fish? Can he make it talk, or make it work for him, or make a pet of it? Can he sell it in the market (41:1-6)? Even if Job were able to catch one, he would be sorry. He would never do it again (7-8)! If then, no person in his right mind would dare stir up Leviathan, how unthinkable to try to stand up against God (9-11).
God then describes some fearsome features of this dragon-like beast: its armor
of tough skin, its strong jaws, its terrible teeth (12-17). When it blows air
and water out of its nostrils, it appears to be blowing out fire and smoke
(18-21). The animal is so fearfully strong that just the sight of its movements
fills even the strongest with terror (22-25). No weapon can pierce its
iron-like skin (26-29). When it moves from the land into the water its
movements dig up the mud like a threshing-sledge and whip up white foam on the
water (30-32). This fearsome creature is the king of beasts, unconquerable by
human power, yet it is part of the world God has created (33-34).
Feast of Mary Queen of Apostles[2]
The feast of the Queen of Apostles was established on the first Saturday after the Ascension by the Sacred Congregation of Rites at the request of the Pallottine Fathers. Mary initiated her mission as Queen of Apostles in the Cenacle. She gathered the apostles together, comforted them, and assisted them in prayer. Together with them she hoped, desired and prayed; with them her petitions were heeded, and she received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.
Mary is Queen of Apostles because she was chosen to be the
Mother of Jesus Christ and to give him to the world; she was made the apostles'
Mother and our own by our Savior on the cross. She was with the apostles while
awaiting the descent of the Holy Spirit, obtaining for them the abundance of
supernatural graces they received on Pentecost. The most holy Virgin was and
always will be the wellspring for every apostolate.
·
She exercised a universal apostolate, one so
vast that it embraced all others. The apostolate of prayer, the apostolate of
good example, the apostolate of suffering--Mary fulfilled them all. Other
people have practiced certain teachings of the Gospel; Mary lived them all.
Mary is full of grace, and we draw from her abundance.
·
Mary attracts the zealous to the various
apostolates, then protects and defends all these works. She sheds on each the
warmth of her love and the light of her countenance. She presented Jesus in a
manner unparalleled throughout the ages. Her apostolate is of the highest
degree--never to be equaled, much less surpassed.
·
Mary gave Jesus to the world and with Jesus came
every other blessing. Thus, because of Mary we have the Church: "Mary is
the Mother of the Church not only because she is the Mother of Christ and his
most intimate associate in 'the new economy when the Son of God took a human
nature from her, that he might in the mysteries of his flesh free man from
sin,' but also because 'she shines forth to the whole community of the elect as
a model of the virtues' (Lumen Gentium. 55, 65).
·
She now continues to fulfill from heaven her
maternal function as the cooperator in the birth and development of the divine
life in the individual souls of the redeemed" (The Great Sign, by Paul
VI). What do we have of value that we have not received through Mary? It is
God's will that every blessing should come to us through her.
·
Because the Blessed Mother occupies a most
important position in God's plan of salvation, all humanity should pay homage
to her. Whoever spreads devotion to the Queen of Apostles is an apostolic
benefactor of the human race, because devotion to Mary is a treasure. Blessed
is the person who possesses this treasure! Mary's devotees will never be
without grace; in any danger, in every circumstance they will always have the
means to obtain every grace from God.
Mary - Mother of Christ, Mother of
the Church[3]
963 Since the Virgin Mary's role
in the mystery of Christ and the Spirit has been treated, it is fitting now to
consider her place in the mystery of the Church. "The Virgin
Mary. . . is acknowledged and honored as being truly the Mother of
God and of the redeemer. . . . She is 'clearly the mother of the
members of Christ’. . . since she has by her charity joined in
bringing about the birth of believers in the Church, who are members of its
head.""Mary, Mother of Christ, Mother of the Church."
Mary's
Motherhood with Regard to the Church
Wholly
united with her Son. . .
964 Mary's role in the Church is
inseparable from her union with Christ and flows directly from it. "This
union of the mother with the Son in the work of salvation is made manifest from
the time of Christ's virginal conception up to his death";504 it is
made manifest above all at the hour of his Passion:
Thus,
the Blessed Virgin advanced in her pilgrimage of faith, and faithfully
persevered in her union with her Son unto the cross. There she stood, in
keeping with the divine plan, enduring with her only begotten Son the intensity
of his suffering, joining herself with his sacrifice in her mother's heart, and
lovingly consenting to the immolation of this victim, born of her: to be given,
by the same Christ Jesus dying on the cross, as a mother to his disciple, with
these words: "Woman, behold your son."
965 After her Son's Ascension,
Mary "aided the beginnings of the Church by her prayers." In her
association with the apostles and several women, "we also see Mary by her
prayers imploring the gift of the Spirit, who had already overshadowed her in
the Annunciation."
966 "Finally the Immaculate
Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her
earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and
exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more
fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and
death." The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular
participation in her Son's Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection
of other Christians:
In
giving birth you kept your virginity; in your Dormition you did not leave the
world, O Mother of God, but were joined to the source of Life. You conceived
the living God and, by your prayers, will deliver our souls from death.
. . .
She is our Mother in the order of grace
967 By her complete adherence to
the Father's will, to his Son's redemptive work, and to every prompting of the
Holy Spirit, the Virgin Mary is the Church's model of faith and charity. Thus
she is a "preeminent and.. . Wholly unique member of the
Church"; indeed, she is the "exemplary realization" of the
Church.
968 Her role in relation to the
Church and to all humanity goes still further. "In a wholly singular way
she cooperated by her obedience, faith, hope, and burning charity in the
Savior's work of restoring supernatural life to souls. For this reason, she is
a mother to us in the order of grace."
969 "This motherhood of Mary
in the order of grace continues uninterruptedly from the consent which she
loyally gave at the Annunciation and which she sustained without wavering
beneath the cross, until the eternal fulfillment of all the elect. Taken up to
heaven she did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold
intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation.
. . . Therefore, the Blessed Virgin is invoked in the Church under
the titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix."
970 "Mary's function as
mother of men in no way obscures or diminishes this unique mediation of Christ,
but rather shows its power. But the Blessed Virgin's salutary influence on men
. . . flows forth from the superabundance of the merits of Christ,
rests on his mediation, depends entirely on it, and draws all its power from
it." "No creature could ever be counted along with the Incarnate
Word and Redeemer; but just as the priesthood of Christ is shared in various
ways both by his ministers and the faithful, and as the one goodness of God is
radiated in different ways among his creatures, so also the unique mediation of
the Redeemer does not exclude but rather gives rise to a manifold cooperation
which is but a sharing in this one source."
Devotion
to the Blessed Virgin
971 "All generations will
call me blessed": "The Church's devotion to the Blessed Virgin is
intrinsic to Christian worship." The Church rightly honors "the
Blessed Virgin with special devotion. From the most ancient times the Blessed
Virgin has been honored with the title of 'Mother of God,' to whose protection
the faithful fly in all their dangers and needs. . . . This very
special devotion . . . differs essentially from the adoration which
is given to the incarnate Word and equally to the Father and the Holy Spirit,
and greatly fosters this adoration." The liturgical feasts dedicated
to the Mother of God and Marian prayer, such as the rosary, an "epitome of
the whole Gospel," express this devotion to the Virgin Mary.
Mary
- Eschatological Icon of the Church
972 After speaking of the Church,
her origin, mission, and destiny, we can find no better way to conclude than by
looking to Mary. In her we contemplate what the Church already is in her
mystery on her own "pilgrimage of faith," and what she will be in the
homeland at the end of her journey. There, "in the glory of the Most Holy
and Undivided Trinity," "in the communion of all the
saints," the Church is awaited by the one she venerates as Mother of
her Lord and as her own mother.
In
the meantime, the Mother of Jesus, in the glory which she possesses in body and
soul in heaven, is the image and beginning of the Church as it is to be
perfected in the world to come. Likewise she shines forth on earth until the
day of the Lord shall come, a sign of certain hope and comfort to the pilgrim
People of God.
973 By pronouncing her
"fiat" at the Annunciation and giving her consent to the Incarnation,
Mary was already collaborating with the whole work her Son was to accomplish.
She is mother wherever he is Savior and head of the Mystical Body.
974 The Most Blessed Virgin Mary,
when the course of her earthly life was completed, was taken up body and soul
into the glory of heaven, where she already shares in the glory of her Son's
Resurrection, anticipating the resurrection of all members of his Body.
975 "We believe that the Holy
Mother of God, the new Eve, Mother of the Church, continues in heaven to
exercise her maternal role on behalf of the members of Christ" (Paul
VI, CPG § 15).
Twilight Zone Day[4]
I think the current rulers of this world are
stranger than the twilight zone where everything was strange and surreal, and
nothing was ever quite as it seems to be.
“You are about to enter another dimension, a
dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous
land of imagination. Next stop, the Twilight Zone!”
Beloved by children, teenagers, and adults alike,
the cult classic TV show The Twilight Zone has affected entire generations of
people, prompting them to take a closer look at life and various phenomena and
take nothing for granted, thanks to its unique combination of science fiction,
mystery, and thriller/horror themes. Not to mention how many of today’s
well-known actors got their start in it—Burt Reynolds, Leonard Nimoy and
William Shatner, to name but a few. How then could this majorly influential
show not have its own holiday?
The Twilight Zone was created by acclaimed
television producer Rod Sterling in 1959, with the first episode premiering on
October 2nd. At the time of its release, it was vastly different from anything
else on TV, and it struggled a bit to carve out a niche for itself at the very
beginning. In fact, Sterling himself, though respected and adored by many, was
famous for being one of Hollywood’s most controversial characters and was often
call the “angry young man” of Hollywood for his numerous clashes with television
executives and sponsors over issues such as censorship, racism, and war.
However, his show soon gained a large, devoted audience. Terry Turner of the
Chicago Daily News gave it a rave review, saying, “…Twilight Zone is about the
only show on the air that I actually look forward to seeing. It’s the one
series that I will let interfere with other plans”. The Twilight Zone ran for
five seasons on CBS from 1959 to 1964.
Twilight Zone Day is an annual holiday created to
celebrate this thought-provoking television series, where everything was
strange and surreal, and nothing was ever quite as it seemed to be.
How to celebrate Twilight Zone Day
There are a number of ways to celebrate Twilight
Zone Day, and the one you choose may be connected to how well you know this TV
series. Believe it or not, there are still people out there who have never seen
it! You could watch some episodes from the classic series, perhaps “To Serve
Man”, “It’s a Good Life”, or “The Eye of the Beholder”, episodes that are
widely considered some of the very best in the entire series. If you don’t know
the series and would like to get a taste of what it was like in a nutshell, you
could also watch the 1983 Twilight Zone Movie. If, on the other hand, you know
The Twilight Zone very well, you could get together with some other Twilight
Zone aficionados and play Twilight board or trivia games. Alternately, you
could discuss who you think were the strangest Twilight Zone villains, and what
the true reasons were for them being the way they were. And what would a good
party be without some tasty drinks? Yes, there are Twilight Zone cocktails!
Finally, you can try making Twilight Zone cocktails,
by mixing Bacardi White, Dark and 151 Proof Rum, Triple Sec, pineapple and
orange juices. Sounds pretty scrumptious, right? And that’s not its only
benefit—if you have a few Twilight Zone Cocktails, you may well find yourself
transported to a different dimension, too!

Train Day[1]
They
cross thousands of miles across the countryside all over the world,
transporting goods and passengers to places far-flung, and bringing back the
same to their point of origin. Two gleaming lines of silver lay their path, as
they move through cities and forests, mountains and plains to bring everything
to those who need it, whether it’s
cargo or people. Of course, we’re
talking about trains, those powerful machines that inspired so much of history
and have done amazing things for economies and industry all over the world.
Train Day commemorates these wonderful machines and the role they play in our
lives.
History of Train Day
The history of Train Day
is the history of trains, and that history goes back farther than you might
suspect. Railroads were actually a progression from wagonways, which were
essentially railroads powered by horse, and have a history going back over 2000
years. The reason wagonways (and of course railways) came into existence was
one of simple practicality, you could transport larger loads over a greater
distance with prepared paths! The first ‘ways’ weren’t even created with metal rails,
they were instead created with wooden rails, and in the distance, path even
cut-stone tracks. By being carefully prepared you could increase the amount a
single horse could haul from one ton to nearly 13 tons! That’s a huge improvement in cargo
capacity and a huge boon to those who have to move a lot of it a goodly
distance. Of course, with wooden rails they had to be often replaced and so it
became common practice to cover them with a thin metal plate to help the wood
last. The industrial revolution changed all that, and metal rails are here to
stay! And then in 2008 Amtrak established Train Day to help celebrate the
history of the locomotive.
How to Celebrate Train Day
The best way to celebrate
train day is to go out and take a ride on a train! It doesn’t matter where it’s going, riding a train can be a
fantastic and relaxing experience. Some towns have steam trains that are part
of their history and still in operation, and dinner trains are always a nice
experience. Or, if you’re
planning on taking a trip, rather than taking a car or plane, take a train for
a relaxing ride across the country. Train Day is a great chance to go out and
see the world and experience these amazing vehicles.

Catechism

PART FOUR: CHRISTIAN PRAYER
SECTION ONE-PRAYER IN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE
CHAPTER THREE-THE LIFE OF PRAYER
Article 3-THE PRAYER OF THE HOUR OF JESUS
2746 When "his hour"
came, Jesus prayed to the Father. His prayer, the longest transmitted by
the Gospel, embraces the whole economy of creation and salvation, as well as
his death and Resurrection. the prayer of the Hour of Jesus always remains his
own, just as his Passover "once for all" remains ever present in the
liturgy of his Church.
2747 Christian Tradition
rightly calls this prayer the "priestly" prayer of Jesus. It is the
prayer of our high priest, inseparable from his sacrifice, from his passing
over (Passover) to the Father to whom he is wholly "consecrated."
2748 In this Paschal and
sacrificial prayer, everything is recapitulated in Christ: God and the
world; the Word and the flesh; eternal life and time; the love that hands
itself over and the sin that betrays it; the disciples present and those who will
believe in him by their word; humiliation and glory. It is the prayer of unity.
2749 Jesus fulfilled the work
of the Father completely; his prayer, like his sacrifice, extends until the end
of time. the prayer of this hour fills the end-times and carries them toward
their consummation. Jesus, the Son to whom the Father has given all things, has
given himself wholly back to the Father, yet expresses himself with a sovereign
freedom by virtue of the power the Father has given him over all flesh.
the Son, who made himself Servant, is Lord, the Pantocrator. Our high priest
who prays for us is also the one who prays in us and the God who hears our
prayer.
2750 By entering into the holy
name of the Lord Jesus we can accept, from within, the prayer he teaches us:
"Our Father!" His priestly prayer fulfills, from within, the great
petitions of the Lord's Prayer: concern for the Father's name; passionate
zeal for his kingdom (Glory); The accomplishment of the will of the
Father, of his plan of salvation; and deliverance from evil.
2751 Finally, in this prayer
Jesus reveals and gives to us the "knowledge," inseparably one, of
the Father and of the Son, which is the very mystery of the life of
prayer.
