And when deprivation wasn’t enough, she ran toward suffering like it was a doorway to Him. She threw herself into furnaces, screaming under the torture, yet walked out unburned. She plunged into the frozen Meuse for days and weeks, praying as the current dragged her into the mill wheel, bones untouched. Dogs tore her flesh as she ran through thorns, yet the wounds vanished the moment she returned.   June 27 — Day 4 of the Nine Days The Jordan as Surrender “He must increase; I must decrease.” John’s greatness is not in his voice or his austerity. His greatness is in his surrender. At the Jordan, he steps aside. He gives away the crowds, the attention, the authority. He decreases so that Christ may rise. This is the hinge of holiness: not achievement, but relinquishment. Not grasping, but yielding. If Day 1 is the Voice, Day 2 the Furnace, Day 3 the Test, Day 4 is the Surrender. A nation approaching its 250th year must learn this again: less ego, more service; less posturing, more humility; less self‑assertion, more room for God.   DAY 35 - MARY, REFUGE OF SINNERS, PRAY FOR US CATCH EXCELLENCE The desire to enter the fight is a desire to enter into a genuine training in holiness, pursuing the goal of becoming one of God's champions. St. Paul put it this way: "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize" (1 Cor 9:24-27). St. Christina belongs in that heat. They said she threw herself into flames, shrieked like a soul being torn open, and walked out untouched. Not spectacle — surrender.
