DAY 52 - OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE, PRAY FOR US POWER OF PRAYER The heroes of our faith are the warrior saints who have gone before us. God worked mightily and miraculously through them. Therefore, we must study their ways. In humility, obedience, and trust (H.O.T.), we ask: How did they remain so well connected, in such strong friendship with God, so that his river of supernatural grace could flow so freely through them? What do these "SEALS for Christ" teach us about the ideal spiritual disciplines, the ultimate daily regimen of prayer? Prayer is our outstanding supernatural resource for fighting the wiles of the enemy. St. Alphonsus said, "Prayer is, beyond doubt, the most powerful weapon the Lord gives us to conquer evil ... but we must really put ourselves into the prayer, it is not enough just to say the words, it must come from the heart. And also prayer needs to be continuous, we must pray no matter what kind of situation we find ourselves in: the warfare we are enga...

SMOKE IN THIS LIFE, NOT THE NEXT Sun, Oct 11 — Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost   Cigar: Medium‑bodied blend   Pour: Buffalo Trace   Reflection: Ordinary duty shapes the soul. Ordinary Time carries a hidden severity. Its quiet days, stripped of feast and drama, reveal whether a man has learned the discipline of readiness. Holiness is rarely forged in crisis; it is shaped in the long obedience of unremarkable hours. And it is precisely here that many souls falter. The saints warn that one of the most common causes of prolonged Purgatory is not spectacular sin but ordinary neglect —especially the neglect of the Sacraments at the hour of death. Christ established these final graces to cleanse the remnants of sin and shorten the fire that follows. But their power requires a soul still capable of receiving them. When a man delays until his mind is dim and his will weakened, the dispositions needed for grace fade. Some delay so long that the priest arrives too late, a...

. SMOKE IN THIS LIFE, NOT THE NEXT Sat, Oct 10 — Saturday of the Twenty-Seventh Week in Ordinary Time Cigar: Dark Maduro  Pour: Old Forester 1920  Reflection: The fire we choose now spares us the fire we cannot choose later. During the novitiate of a certain monastery, a spirit appeared repeatedly, urging the young religious to pray for the souls in Purgatory. Its plea was urgent, almost desperate: they suffer frightfully, and they are grateful beyond measure to those who help their deliverance. Then came the harder word—of the five priests who had died in that Abbey, not one had yet entered Heaven. All were still undergoing purification. The Abbot himself signed the account, leaving the conclusion unstated because it did not need to be spoken. Holiness is real, and so is the fire that makes a soul capable of Heaven. The modern man shrugs at Purgatory, imagining it as a waiting room rather than a furnace of love. But the saints speak differently. Catherine of Genoa describ...
