SEPTEMBER 27 Friday-St. Vincent De Paul
1 SAMUEL, Chapter 22, Verse 23
Stay
with me. Do not be AFRAID; whoever
seeks your life must seek my life also. You are under my protection.”
David
said this to Abiathar: the sole survivor of Eli’s
household which Saul killed for giving aid to David. David now has in his
service the only priest of the Lord left in the land and exclusive access to
the ephod for consulting the Lord. David later appoints Abiathar co-high priest
with Zadok in Jerusalem.
Yet,
when I read this verse, I hear the Lord saying this to us all-Stay with me-do
not be afraid. Today, go to the Blessed Sacrament and spend some time with the
Lord. There our Lord will pull us to Himself and transform us into warriors and
conquerors. Draw near to Him and He will transform your disenchantment with the
world and help you along the road to holiness and sainthood.
Our lives
are songs; God writes the words and we set them to music at pleasure; and the
song grows glad, or sweet or sad, as we choose to fashion the measure.
Ella Wheeler Wilcox.
Feast of St.
Vincent de Paul[1]
Having lived and worked in Belgium
it is interesting to note the little “d” from “de Paul” normally denotes that
Vincent was of a royal blood line.
St. Vincent de Paul was a
great apostle of charity and brought a great revival of the priesthood in the
17th century. He was born near Dax in the Landes (France) in 1581. As a young
priest he was captured by Moorish pirates who carried him to Africa. He was
sold into slavery but freed in 1607 when he converted his owner. Having
returned to France, he became successively a parish priest and chaplain to the
galley-slaves. He founded a religious Congregation under the title of Priests
of the Mission or Lazarists (now known as Vincentians), and he bound them by a
special way to undertake the apostolic work of charity; he sent them to preach
missions, especially to the ignorant peasants of that time, and to establish
seminaries. In order to help poor girls, invalids, and the insane, sick and
unemployed, he and St. Louise de Marillac founded the Congregation of the
Daughters of Charity, now better known as the Sisters of St. Vincent. St.
Vincent worked tirelessly to help those in need: the impoverished, the sick, the
enslaved, the abandoned, the ignored. He died in 1660 at St. Lazarus's house,
Paris. His motto: "Let us love God; but at the price of our hands and
sweat of our face."
Things to Do:[2]
- Find
out more about the Vincent de Paul Society near you, see if you can
participate.
- Find
out more about the two orders founded by St. Vincent.
- Other
people to find out more about: St.
Louise de Marillac, Bl. Frederic Ozanam and St.
Francis de Sales.
- Learn
what France was like during St. Vincent's life. At that war-torn time, the
lives of peasants were far removed from those of the nobility.
- Make
a banner or poster with St. Vincent's motto to remind us of God's
presence.
Remembering that, "God sees you."

Church
Day 106
Symbols of the Church
753 In Scripture, we find a
host of interrelated images and figures through which Revelation speaks of the
inexhaustible mystery of the Church. the images taken from the Old Testament
are variations on a profound theme: the People of God. In the New Testament,
all these images find a new center because Christ has become the head of this
people, which henceforth is his Body. Around this center are grouped
images taken "from the life of the shepherd or from cultivation of the
land, from the art of building or from family life and marriage."
754 "The Church is,
accordingly, a sheepfold, the sole and necessary gateway to which is Christ. It
is also the flock of which God himself foretold that he would be the shepherd,
and whose sheep, even though governed by human shepherds, are unfailingly
nourished and led by Christ himself, the Good Shepherd and Prince of Shepherds,
who gave his life for his sheep.
755 "The Church is a
cultivated field, the tillage of God. On that land the ancient olive tree grows
whose holy roots were the prophets and in which the reconciliation of Jews and
Gentiles has been brought about and will be brought about again. That land,
like a choice vineyard, has been planted by the heavenly cultivator. Yet the
true vine is Christ who gives life and fruitfulness to the branches, that is,
to us, who through the Church remain in Christ, without whom we can do nothing.
756 "Often, too, the
Church is called the building of God. the Lord compared himself to the stone
which the builders rejected, but which was made into the comer-stone. On this
foundation the Church is built by the apostles and from it the Church receives
solidity and unity. This edifice has many names to describe it: the house of
God in which his family dwells; the household of God in the Spirit; the
dwelling-place of God among men; and, especially, the holy temple. This temple,
symbolized in places of worship built out of stone, is praised by the Fathers
and, not without reason, is compared in the liturgy to the Holy City, the New
Jerusalem. As living stones, we here on earth are built into it. It is this
holy city that is seen by John as it comes down out of heaven from God when the
world is made anew, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband.
757 "The Church, further,
which is called 'that Jerusalem which is above' and 'our mother', is described
as the spotless spouse of the spotless lamb. It is she whom Christ 'loved and
for whom he delivered himself up that he might sanctify her.' It is she whom he
unites to himself by an unbreakable alliance, and whom he constantly 'nourishes
and cherishes.'"

Pyramid Workout[3]
60 Second Wall Sit
·
Stand
with your back pressing against a wall.
·
Slide
downward into a squat position by moving your feet forward until your knees
make a 90-degree angle and your hamstrings are parallel to the floor.
·
Hold
this move as long as you can.
50 Walking Lunges
·
Stand
upright, feet together, and take a controlled step forward with your right leg,
lowering your hips toward the floor by bending both knees to 90-degree angles.
·
The
back knee should point toward, not touch the ground, and your front knee should
be directly over the ankle.
·
Press
your right heel into the ground, and push off with your left foot to bring your
left leg forward, stepping with control into a lunge on the other side. This
completes two reps.
40 Calf Raises
·
Stand
on the edge of a step or aerobics platform.
·
The
balls of your feet should be firmly planted on the step and your heels should
hang over the edge.
·
Raise
your heels a few inches above the edge of the step so you’re on your tiptoes.
·
Hold
the position for a moment, then lower your heels below the platform, feeling
the stretch in your calf muscles.
30 Squats
·
Stand
facing forward with your chest up.
·
Place
your feet shoulder-width apart or slightly wider. Extend your hands straight
out in front of you to help keep your balance. You can also hold your hands at
chest level or place them behind your head.
·
Bend
at your knees and hips, sticking your butt out like you’re sitting into an
imaginary chair. Keep your chest lifted and your spine neutral, and do not let
your lower back round.
·
Squat
down as low as you can, keeping your head and chest lifted. Keep your knees
over your ankles and press your weight back into your heels.
·
Keep
your body tight, and push through your heels to bring yourself back to the
starting position. This is one rep.
20 Plie Squats
·
Stand
with your feet wide, toes pointing out. Hold your hands comfortably in front of
your chest.
·
Bend
your knees, lowering your hips so your thighs are almost parallel with the

top of the movement. This counts as one rep.
10 Single Leg Deadlifts (each side)
·
Stand
with all your weight on your right foot, abs engaged and chest lifted.
·
Reach
your torso forward as you lift your left leg behind you. Reach your arms out to

·
Hold
this position for a moment, and reach through your left heel to engage the back
of the left leg.
·
Moving
in one piece, lower your left leg toward the floor as you return to standing
upright, resting the left foot lightly on the ground. This completes one rep.
