How To Pray The Rosary - The purpose of the Rosary is to help keep in memory certain principal events or mysteries in the history of our salvation, and to thank and praise God for them. There are twenty mysteries reflected upon in the Rosary, and these are divided into the five JOYFUL MYSTERIES, the five LUMINOUS MYSTERIES, the five SORROWFUL MYSTERIES, and the five GLORIOUS MYSTERIES.

1.    Make the Sign of the Cross and say the "Apostles' Creed."

2.    Say the "Our Father."

3.    Say three "Hail Marys."

4.    Say the "Glory be to the Father."

5.    Announce the First Mystery; then say the "Our Father."

6.    Say ten "Hail Marys," while meditating on the Mystery.

7.    Say the "Glory be to the Father."

Announce the Second Mystery; then say the "Our Father. Repeat 6 and 7 and continue with Third, Fourth and Fifth Mysteries in the same manner.

After each decade say the following prayer requested by the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have most need of your mercy."

To begin the Rosary make the Sign of the Cross and say the Apostles Creed.

The Apostles' Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

Say an Our Father:

Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven. And give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen

Say three Hail Marys:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen

THE RESURRECTION

Desired Spiritual Fruit: Faith

1.    "Amen, amen, I say to you, that you shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy." (John 16:20)

2.    "For I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one shall take from you."  (John 16:22)

3.    “At early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared.”  (Luke 24:1)

4.    “And behold, an angel of the Lord came down from Heaven, and drawing near rolled back the stone.” (Matt. 28:2)

5.    "Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus, who was crucified." (Matt. 28:5)

6.    "He is not here, but has risen. Behold the place where they laid Him."  (Luke 24:6; Mark 16:6)

7.    "And behold, He goes before you into Galilee; there you shall see Him." (Matt. 28:7)

9.    "I am the Resurrection and the Life; he who believes in Me, even if he die, shall live." (John 11:25)

THE ASCENSION

5.    "Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you."  (Matt. 28:20)

6.    "He who believes and is baptized shall be saved." (Mark 16:16)

8.    "And behold, I am with you all days, even unto the consummation of the world." (Matt. 28:20)

THE DESCENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

5.    “Now there were staying in Jerusalem devout Jews from every nation under Heaven.” (Acts 2:5)

6.    “And Peter, standing up with the Eleven, lifted up his voice and spoke to them.”  (Acts 2:14)

7.    "Repent and be baptized; and you will receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38)

8.    “Now they who received his word were baptized and there were added that day about three thousand souls.” (Acts 2:41)

9.    “Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created; and Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.”  (Ps. 103:30)

THE ASSUMPTION

Desired Spiritual Fruit: To Jesus through Mary

2.    “For He has so magnified thy name this day, that thy praise shall not depart out of the mouths of men.” (Judith 13:25)

3.    “In every nation which shall hear thy name, the God of Israel shall be magnified on occasion of thee.” (Judith 13:31)

4.    “Thou art the glory of Jerusalem, thou art the joy of Israel, thou art the honor of our people.” (Judith 15:10)

5.    “Hear, O daughter, and see; turn your ear, for the king shall desire your beauty.” (Ps. 44:11-1 2)

6.    “And the temple of God in Heaven was opened, and there came flashes of lightning, and peals of thunder.” (Rev. 11:19)

THE CORONATION

Desired Spiritual Fruit: Grace of Final Perseverance

1.    “Who is this that comes forth like the dawn, as beautiful as the moon, as resplendent as the sun?”  (Cant. 6:10)

2.    “Like the rainbow appearing in the cloudy sky; like the blossoms on the branches in springtime.” (Sir. 50:8-9)

3.    “I am the mother of fair love, and of fear, and of knowledge, and of holy hope.” (Sir. 24:24)

4.    “In me is all grace of the way and of truth, in me is all hope of life and of virtue.” (Sir. 24:25)

5.    “Come to me, all you that yearn for me, and be filled with my fruits.”  (Sir. 24:26)

6.    “You will remember me as sweeter than honey, better to have than the honeycomb.” (Sir. 24:27)

7.    “So now, children, listen to me; instruction and wisdom do not reject!”  (Prov. 8:32-33)

8.    “Happy are those who keep my ways, watching daily at my gates.”  (Prov. 8:33-34)

9.    “For he who finds me finds life, and wins favor from the Lord.”  (Prov. 8:35)

10.        “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.  For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things,  and the rich he has sent away empty.  He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.” (Luke 1:45-55)

To finish the Rosary say the Hail, Holy Queen:

HAIL, HOLY QUEEN, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!

2.    R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

3.    Let us pray. O GOD, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
