SMOKE IN THIS LIFE, NOT THE NEXT Wed, Oct 7 — Our Lady of the Rosary / First Wednesday Cigar: Medium Habano Pour: Basil Hayden Reflection: Some battles need a Rosary, not a strategy. October 7 commemorates Lepanto, where Christendom stood outmatched on the water and knelt victorious on the shore. The victory was won not by naval cunning, but through beads slipping through calloused fingers. Yet the greatest war is fought within the soul’s hidden borders, against the subtle sins that trail us toward eternity. The saints do not soften what awaits an unpurified soul. Bellarmine, Augustine, and Aquinas speak with one sober voice: the least torment of Purgatory surpasses the sharpest agony of earth. Stripped of the mortal flesh that dampens our pain, the bare soul encounters a purifying fire so intense that, as the Imitation of Christ warns, a single hour there outweighs a century of terrestrial penance. The flames of the next life are mercilessly thorough; the penance of this life i...

Fulton Sheen's Never-Before-Seen Writings on the Demonic

Image
Evil in America rarely announces itself with horns and sulfur ; it arrives the way Fulton Sheen warned it would—quietly, daily, through the erosion of interior life. The hosts in your video linger on Sheen’s insistence that the devil’s preferred battleground is not the extraordinary but the ordinary: the distracted mind, the unguarded heart, the soul that has forgotten how to pray. America’s crisis, they argue, is not fundamentally political but spiritual. It is the slow surrender of silence to noise, of identity to confusion, of reverence to spectacle. Sheen saw this decades ago, warning that the demonic thrives when a people lose the ability to sit still before God. The conversation turns to Sheen’s three signs of the demonic—immodesty, violence, and fractured identity —and places them against the American landscape like a diagnostic chart. Our culture’s fixation on exposure, its celebration of aggression, its confusion about the human person: these are not merely social trends but s...

SMOKE IN THIS LIFE, NOT THE NEXT Sun, Oct 4 — Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost / St. Francis of Assisi   Cigar: Rustic Broadleaf  Pour: Buffalo Trace Reflection: Simplicity restores the soul. Paul’s insistence on our former death is not morbid; it is medicinal. He speaks with the clarity of a man who has seen the grave from the inside. In Ephesians he says we were dead in trespasses and sins. In Colossians he repeats it, adding the uncircumcision of the flesh. In Romans he expands the image, describing the fruit of death borne in our bodies. Paul is not layering metaphors. He is naming a condition. Before Christ, we were not spiritually sluggish or morally confused. We were dead to God, incapable of life, incapable of love, incapable of obedience. The corpse cannot revive itself; it can only be raised. This is why simplicity restores the soul. Francis understood that resurrection requires space. A man cluttered with possessions, ambitions, and self‑importance cannot...
