FITNESS FRIDAY — FORGE OF AGES (CATHOLIC)
Week 13 — The Swiss Pikeman: The Steadfast Body
November 13, 2026
Forge of Ages is a year-long journey through history's great physical archetypes. Each week focuses on one practical body principle, one nutrition lesson, and one spiritual virtue. The goal is not just fitness. The goal is readiness: becoming stronger, more capable, and more useful in service to faith, family, work, and community.
The Steadfast Body
A knight protected those under his care.
The Swiss pikeman protected an entire line.
For centuries, Swiss infantry earned a reputation as some of the toughest soldiers in Europe. They marched long distances through mountains, stood firm under pressure, and held formation when others broke.
Their strength was not found in heroic moments.
It was found in consistency.
One step. One march. One training session. One duty completed.
Over time those small efforts became extraordinary capability.
The same principle applies today.
Most adults do not need dramatic fitness programs. They need the ability to show up week after week, year after year, without quitting.
The Swiss Pikeman teaches us that endurance is built through steady effort.
Not flashy effort.
Steady effort.
BODY FOCUS
Endurance Strength
This week's objective is simple:
Stay strong longer.
Training benefits:
- Improved work capacity
- Better cardiovascular health
- Greater leg endurance
- Stronger posture
- Better recovery between efforts
The strongest man is not always the one who starts fast.
Often, he is the one still moving when everyone else has stopped.
TABLE FOCUS
Fuel for Consistency
The pikeman's secret was not a perfect diet.
It was reliable nutrition that supported daily work.
Breakfast
- Oatmeal with raisins and nuts
- Eggs and whole-grain toast
- Yogurt with fruit
Lunch
- Bean soup and bread
- Chicken sandwich and fruit
- Tuna salad with vegetables
Dinner
- Beef stew and potatoes
- Baked chicken with rice and vegetables
- Chili with beans
- Pork loin and roasted vegetables
The Pikeman's Rule
Most meals should include:
✅ Protein
✅ Vegetables or fruit
✅ Slow-digesting carbohydrates
✅ Water
The goal is not perfection.
The goal is showing up tomorrow ready to work.
SPIRIT FOCUS
Steadfastness
Many people begin with enthusiasm.
Few continue with persistence.
The Christian life often requires less drama and more endurance.
Pray when you feel like it.
Pray when you do not.
Serve when it is convenient.
Serve when it is not.
Faithfulness grows through repetition.
Prayer
Lord, give me the strength to remain faithful in small things, so that I may be trusted with greater things.

The challenge is consistency.
THIS WEEK'S TAKEAWAY
Mind: Consistency beats intensity.
Body: Build endurance.
Table: Fuel daily effort.
Spirit: Remain faithful.
Take the next step.
Then another.
Then another.
The man who keeps advancing eventually arrives where others only intended to go.
The Knight asks: Who can depend on me when I arrive?
The Swiss Pikeman asks: Will I still be standing when the hard season comes?
