PURIM
Genesis, Chapter 43, Verse 23
He replied, “Calm down! Do not FEAR!
Your God and the God of your father must have put treasure in your bags for
you. As for your money, I received it.” With that, he led Simeon out to them.
Being
calm under pressure or threat is the ultimate way we can show trust in God.
Here are some more verses to ponder on calming down:[1]
· Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun set on your
anger, and do not leave room for the devil.
(Ep. 4:26-27)
· For God did not give us a spirit of
cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. (2Tm. 1:7)

He
hushed the storm to silence; the waves of the sea were stilled. They
rejoiced that the sea grew calm, that God brought them to the harbor they
longed for. (Ps. 107:29-30)

He
got into a boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a
violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by
waves; but he was asleep. They came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We
are perishing!” He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little
faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great
calm. The men were amazed and said, “What sort of man is this,
whom even the winds and the sea obey?” (Mt. 8:23-27)
Many are afraid of our Pope, the president,
and the communist new world order—Calm Down! Do not Fear! Remember the Lord’s
words to Pilate "You wouldn't have any authority over me if it hadn't been
given to you from above.”

Prayer. BE propitious, O Lord, to our
prayers, and heal the desires of our souls, that, having received forgiveness,
we may ever rejoice in Thy benediction.
EPISTLE, in. Kings
xvii. 8-16.
In
those days: The word of the Lord came to Elias, the Thesbite, saying: Arise,
and go to Sarephta a city of the idonians, and dwell there: for I have
commanded a widow woman there to feed thee. He arose and went to Sarephta. And
when he was come to the gate of the city, he saw the widow woman gathering
sticks, and he called her, and said to her: Give me a little water in a vessel,
that I may drink. And when she was going to fetch it, he called after her,
saying: Bring me also, I beseech thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand. And she
answered: As the Lord thy God liveth, I have no bread, but only a handful of
meal in a pot, and a little oil in a cruse: behold I am gathering two sticks
that I may go in and dress it, for me and my son, that we may eat it and die.
And Elias said to her: Fear not but go and do as thou hast said: but first make
for me of the same meal a little hearth-cake and bring it to me: and after make
for thyself and thy son. For thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: The pot of
meal shall not waste, nor the cruse of oil be diminished, until the day wherein
the Lord will give rain upon the face of the earth. She went and did according
to the word of Elias: and he ate, and she and her house: and from that day the
pot of meal wasted not, and the cruse of oil was not diminished, according to
the word of the Lord, which He spoke in the hand of Elias.

At that time
Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, saying: The scribes and the
Pharisees have sitten on the chair of Moses. All things therefore whatsoever
they shall say to you, observe and do: but according to their works do ye not:
for they say, and do not. For they bind heavy and insupportable burdens and lay
them on men’s shoulders: but with a finger of their own they will not move
them. And all their works they do for to be seen of men. For they make their
phylacteries broad and enlarge their fringes. And they love the first places at
feasts, and the first chairs in the synagogues, and salutations in the
marketplace, and to be called by men, Rabbi. But be not you called Rabbi. For One
is your master, and all you are brethren. And call none your father upon earth:
for One is your father Who is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for One
is your master, Christ. He that is the greatest among you shall be your
servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled: and he that shall
humble himself shall be exalted.
Explanation. The law of God imposes certain
obligations on us. The priest and the teacher teach God’s Gospel in His name,
and we shall be judged if we refuse to believe God’s truth and, in His Church,
because our teachers may not practice what they preach.
The greatest proof of Christ's charity was given on the Cross. With Christ our gift of ourselves will be given to God as an expression of our love. Communion will lift our human activities up to God's level, not only in will and intention, but in the reality of the sacrament. Let us offer then, and believe, and change our lives into more loving. —St. Andrew Bible Missal
A Jewish Holiday which commemorates Jewish people being saved from extermination in Persia. The story of Purim comes from the Biblical book of Esther. In it, Haman a high-ranking advisor to King Ahasuerus sought to kill all Jews in ancient Persia. He is motivated by an incident in which Mordechai, a Jewish leader, defied the king's orders and refused to bow to Haman. Haman is stopped through the actions of Mordechai and his niece Esther, a beautiful and courageous Jewish woman. Esther initially disguises her Jewish Identity and eventually becomes Queen. Through their actions the King becomes aware of Haman's plot and is persuaded to have him hanged.

is considered to be a joyous Holiday often accompanied by celebrations, plays,
festive food and costume parties.

Purim
holiday is often preceded by fast, referred to as the Fast of Esther.
This fast commemorates Esther's three days of fasting in preparation for
her meeting with the king. The fast is observed from dawn until dusk on
the eve of Purim.
·
The
story of Purim is told in the book of Esther, which is also known as "the
Scroll" (Megillah in Hebrew).
· If I have found favor with you, O king, and if it pleases your majesty, grant me my life - this is my petition, and the life of my people - this is my request. (Esther 7:3)
Purim Top Events and Things to Do
·
Make
a Mishloach
Manot (also known as mishloach manos or shalach manos). This is a
gift of at least two kinds of food that are ready to eat. Give them out
to neighbors, friends and associates.
·
Make
Hamantaschen
cookies. These are pocket triangle shaped cookies that are often made
with fruit, poppy seed or cheese filling.
·
Attend
a Purim Carnival or Festival. Some of the more popular ones are the
Carnival at Mamilla (Jerusalem) and Cirque Du Purim in Minneapolis.
·
Donate
to the poor. It is customary and part of tradition to give at least two
gifts to two poor people on Purim.
· Visit a Jewish Museum. Many put on special activities for kids such as plays, performances, and costume parties

Chapter 2 “You shall love your neighbor as
yourself.
Article 8-THE EIGHTH COMMANDMENT
2504 "You shall not bear false witness against your
neighbor" (Ex 20:16). Christ's disciples have "put on the new man,
created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness" (Eph
4:24).
2505 Truth or truthfulness is the virtue which consists in
showing oneself true in deeds and truthful in words, and guarding against
duplicity, dissimulation, and hypocrisy.
2506 The Christian is not to "be ashamed of testifying to
our Lord" (2 Tim 1:8) in deed and word. Martyrdom is the supreme witness
given to the truth of the faith.
2507 Respect for the reputation and honor of persons forbids
all detraction and calumny in word or attitude.
2508 Lying consists in saying what is false with the intention
of deceiving the neighbor who has the right to the truth.
2509 An offense committed against the truth requires
reparation.
2510 The golden rule helps one discern, in concrete situations,
whether or not it would be appropriate to reveal the truth to someone who asks
for it.
